A Mile Deep and an Inch Wide (MDiW) is opposed to the old saying… “a mile wide and an inch deep”, implying a vast yet shallow experience. Unfortunately, a broad and shallow perspective seems welcome in the modern church age. It is, in some cases, a requirement for acceptance. With a corporate approach, characteristics, and culture lacking depth, is it any surprise that we have lost a sense of true discipleship? I have found myself becoming part of a church culture enticed by surface-skimming, clickbait-laden headlines and half-baked morsels of information, which breeds a population of “experts.” I know I am not alone in my frustration. That is why, on the contrary … we are going a mile DEEP while remaining an inch WIDE. The purpose is FOCUS!

This website attempts to address the scope and depth of modern Christian beliefs and behaviors by eliminating the ever-widening digital landscape of our age. This is accomplished by purposefully journeying deeper to understand, apply, and evaluate the results of what we claim to believe. Simply stated … I desire a focused study of God’s Word and its application in real life, because I am tired of failing. So I am creating podcasts, blog entries, and courses to satisfy this need in my own life.

Through focused methods, we will delve into discipleship-centered studies and discussions designed to help those who STINK at being Christians get EQUIPPED through proven learning methods and objectives. This includes instructional design principles, adult learning principles, and multiple considerations that are not always present in modern church programs but are always present in our natural learning progressions. Through a unique and relatable experience, I will deliver the content in an engaging, at times humorous, somewhat sarcastic, and always direct manner that incorporates elements of history, educational psychology, and relevance for everyone. This is my spiritual cannonball into the deep end of the pool. Let’s go!

To the listener/reader:

Normally, this section is where (along with a professionally enhanced picture of themselves) the author/host “connects” with you and leaves contact info so you can “follow” them. Not here. I think that’s kinda weird. Therefore, I do not currently have social media platforms to follow. I believe a “friend” is someone you get to know and with whom you develop a relationship based on mutual interests and respect. An upward thumb (likes) and an approval rating do not equal friendship.

I hope that those who identify with me as a learner will get connected to a deeper understanding of our faith. You will get enough of my background, qualifications, and epic failures throughout the last half-century via the site content. You will find that I am a work in progress and need frequent tune-ups! :)

Please keep in mind that I do not consider this to be “ministry” as many modern church folk would define it. I am a regular dude who happens to be a researcher and teacher, and this website is a tool from my toolbox. That is why there is a picture of a tool bench rather than my photoshopped face. :)
